Child Life in Colonial Days Alice Morse Earle 9781558888227 Books Reviews
This book written in the late 19th century is a colletion of half-truths and folk loric tales that is hard to swallow for any true modern historian. No bibliography to be found nor use of primary documentation which is not surprising since she wrote most of this from what she remembered as a child or was told thus 18th and 19th century folk lore gets mixed up. Honestly, there wasn't a page that I read that didn't have an obvious mistake. I know this book is being used by teachers which is a shame since they are passing on misinformation. If you really want to get a feel for what life was like in the 18th century please look at books written after 1970 and are based on an individual subject such as foodways or clothing, women's rights and child birth. Not convienient I know but a whole lot more accurate.
I like everything about this book. It's terse and the examples given are directly to some point or another, especially to give character to times that are long gone. And yet there's enough insight -- 110 years ago! -- that some statements could have been written in the last decade. The original hardcover version I have has quite a few illustrations as well as whole page "plates". Earle makes use of several kinds of references, and quotes them at reasonable length. The author uses language that is elaborate and precise, but not academic, encouraging the reader's close attention. Strongly recommended for social historians or teens with a historical bent.
