They are simple phrases. They sound Christian - like something you might find in the Bible. We've all heard these words. Maybe we've said them. They capture some element of truth, yet they miss the point in important ways.

Join Adam Hamilton in searching for the whole truth by comparing common Christian clichés to the message and ministry of Jesus. The clichés include

  • Everything happens for a reason.
  • God helps those who help themselves.
  • God won't give you more than you can handle.
  • God said it, I believe it, that settles it.
  • Love the sinner, hate the sin.

Half Truths God Helps Those Who Help Themselves and Other Things the Bible Doesn't Say (Audible Audio Edition) Adam Hamilton Ben Holland Abingdon Press Books

This is an almost deceptive book - at first it seems like an accessible walk through the common sayings that, once reconsidered, most Christians would dispense with - but it's more. Examining phrases like "God Helps Those Who Help Themselves" and "God Won't Give You More Than You Can Handle", the author explores our basic understanding of God, our relationship with our Creator and our relationships with each other. It can be read on my levels - I recommend it highly.

Half Truths God Helps Those Who Help Themselves and Other Things the Bible Doesn't Say (Audible Audio Edition) Adam Hamilton Ben Holland Abingdon Press Books Reviews

With his usual straight forward honesty, Adam Hamilton examines 5 common "Christian" phrases that are not altogether true. He has biblical examples for his opinions to back up his assertions.
This book is reader-friendly and a great bible study to discuss in a group. There is no participant guide, but a facilitator using the Leader guide will help probe each chapter's wealth of knowledge. I highly recommend this book!
Just finished this 5-week study w/ my church. Thought-provoking & discussion oriented w/o being preachy. This study helped us learn how to think theologically. Most of these statements have been pet peeves of mine, and Rev. Hamilton's words ring true.
Great Book, really makes you think about things we often say to people without considering what we are really saying to them about ourselves and what we believe about God.
I write this review tonight as I prepare to teach the final Sunday School lesson from chapter 5 in this book. We are an adult Sunday School class in a United Methodist Church in Austin, Texas. We may be considered progressive Christians by some.
In any case, we learned a lot from this book which takes five common phrases, repeated by a lot of Christians and uses them as chapter headings to shows the truth and perhaps the error in them.
We like a lot of discussion in our class, and this book engendered that.
Most of the people who have been raised in the church have been taught the truths of what that domination thought was true. I was raised in a certain church and knew that I was saved, but others were not . they're outsiders. I now see with different eyes. There is one church, one people and one God who loves all.this is a good book for those who need to expand their faith and understanding of God. Love is the answer, now what is the question?
Thought provoking and a good book for Christians to read. Rev. Hamilton calls the book "Half Truths" but he is too modest. He is right more often than he is wrong so I would have called it "75 Percent Truths". For example, we are to hate sin. Hate it for how it hurts people and for how it hurts God. We are also to love people we know are sinning. We are of no help to them if we simply ignore the sin or if we fail to love them. The book is a good discussion starter for small groups, rather than a set of final answers.
This is a book which found it's genesis in a series of sermons about Christian Half Truths. Half Truths are things that many (most?) Christians believe uncritically, but have some series problems when considered carefully. Adam Hamilton approaches these half truths helpfully. It was obvious to this reader that these were sermons and not a scholarly treatment. But I did find them useful as I worked on my own sermons about some of these half truths and some others which Hamilton did not consider.
